I've had this lamp and it's desktop version for several years now and I thought I should offer a review since I'm experienced with them. My parents bought these for me as a birthday present before I moved out to college. That was in 2006 and I still have these lamps. The metal finish doesn't show scratches, and it doesn't scratch easily. The original bulbs are still going and I run them often. The transformer in the lamps originally made a slight humming noise but I no longer notice it. They flicker to turn on but that isn't anything to fuss over. Reading on the computer or in a textbook with these lamps is like reading them out in natural, perfectly bright, sunlight.

I lived in Florida my whole life and then moved to New York where dismal gray occurs much more often. The lamps definitely helped me get over the sun setting hours earlier and the gray days. Having them on definitely made me feel like there was still sunlight outside coming into my room, even late at night.

The lamps get as warm as any other lamp in my experience, and can be quite bright when looking at the bulb. However, the lamps don't put out as much light as regular lamps. I actually use the desk lamp on my desk, and the floor lamp right next to my desk to cancel out the shadows. I have a central ceiling light in my room and use that in conjunction with these to create a brightly lit room. But these lamps weren't made to be really bright, they were made to imitate sunlight coming through a window, and that they do perfectly.

I recommend one change for customers to make to this lamp: assemble the top lamp part backwards from what the picture shows. The difference won't be too apparent, except the felt pad to keep the lamp pieces from scratching won't be in the right position. If you do this, the lamp can angle upward much more than the other way, and spread out the light across a greater area. I really liked this change; if you dislike the dark look that lamps create by lighting only certain areas, you will enjoy it too.

Despite a few set backs (brightness and needing to make a small modification), I still give these lamps 5 stars. They're five years old and look brand new, they are still stylish, they still get compliments for their looks and the light they output. Best of all, they actually do what they claim to do as OttLites: produce natural-looking sunlight. And they are definitely worth this reduced price.

This is hardly a floor lamp as the illumination is just about sufficient for a desk. It is really a desk lamp on a pedestal, and has one fluorescent bulb.

The lighting itself is fine. It takes three or four "blinks" before the light flashes on fully. Guess that might be expected of fluorescent lamps. On one of the lamps I bought, the starter did not fit in properly (loose fit) and needed manual handling before the light would come on.

An expensive affair. Wish they had at least two bulb/tubes in there.

The lighting does look natural.

Ordered this lamp to satisfy several requirements we had. We needed a lamp that was visually almost invisible, was excellent for reading, was floor-standing, and would fit behind a wall hugging recliner in a corner room position. It met all of these requirements perfectly. The only issues relate to satisfactorily tightening of the post to base and of the tilt arm. Concerned with overtightening, both tend to loosen up a bit with contact.

Nice sturdy bright lamp with a heavy base. My only gripe is that theres no switch on the lamp, its a cord switch which is inconvenient because its behind the couch. I happened to have an outlet open that is controlled by a wall switch, so thats not a problem for me.

Credit should be given where due. While 98% of lighting offered to the general public is at best ghastly, devoid of taste, this fixture is simple, elegant, understated and has the ability to be upgraded with just a few simple details. I added some smart rosettes to the Ball bolts as well as some additional chain links to the four arms. I did it to introduce some upgraded elements as well as an under-canopy acanthus leaf detail. Since the light reflects upward as well, these details are then highlighted. Altogether it gives an impression of a much more expensive alabaster fixture. One wonders just who it is designing lighting fixtures for these companies. Most are awful in the extreme. Why is it that taste in America has dropped so far? Dudes, get it together!

I am very disappointed with the lamp. It looks great on the picture but it's not as classy. In fact the materials are second rate and once assembled it looks "cheaper" than in the picture and description. For example, nowhere in the description does it say it has pained plastic parts but the part that right above the 3 discs an below the shade is painted plastic and it shows; looks quite tacky. Also the underside of the 3 chrome discs are not properly finished and have these black spots can be seen when standing next to it.

Also beware the bulbs show above the shade.

I wish I could return it -I don't have the original packaging any longer...

My husband and I live in a low level Manhattan apartment with very little natural light. We have no overhead lighting so we needed floor lamps that would brightly light our rooms, yet still look attractive enough so as not to detract from how we decorated our rooms. We chose the Adesso Metropolis floor lamp because it uses two bright 150 watt bulbs and we like the sleek design. The lamp is very attractive with a metallic looking stem and a glass half globe. We put one of them in two corners of each room and the lamps light the room very well. We also like that the lamp has two settings and we often use the lower setting in the evening when we are relaxing and do not want such bright light.

The lamp were packaged well and no parts were damaged in any of the lamps that we ordered. The assembly of the lamp is very easy and took my husband only about 7 minutes. We have had no problems with the quality of the lamps and we have six of them, which we have used for the past year. We highly recommend the Adesso Metropolis floor lamp!

I needed a new lamp for the office and wanted something with a bit of style for little bucks...was nervous with the couple of extremely negative reviews, but went ahead as I like the look. Glad I did it was a cinch to put together, has a nice deco look to it and the glass shade allows light to go down as well as up, which is what I was hoping. The switch has low/hi settings so I'm guessing this wouldn't work with non-dimmable CFLs unless you just used the high setting.

As for the negative reviews sounds like the first two reviewers just got duds that were somehow damaged, which is a shame. No problems here. And 'painted plastic parts'? WTF? I think this reviewer had the wrong product there is nothing plastic on this lamp that I can find. It's all metal/chrome and glass. (Ok I'm editing this because it just occurred to me that they might have been referring to the black lamp, and since I haven't seen that one I can't comment. The chrome one has no painted parts)

Oh yes, the Styrofoam packaging did get all over the place while opening. What an incredible, horrible, terrible hassle! Now I will have to vacuum! Or should I just return it? LOL

Best $90 I ever spent (well, my boss ever spent) on a lamp.

I wanted a magnifier for building models. Unfortunately I had to return this item. It is extremely substantial, however, because of its size and heaviness it will not fit my particular needs. It is very heavy and would require a large heavy table to attach it to. It's well worth the price but perhaps for drafting etc. It's not for doing needlework which is what I need. The lens is very large and this is a product that is well worth the price paid.

UPDATE, 8.07.2012: It is over 4 years old and still holding up. The one complaint I had is that the bulb looks ugly inside it. I recently used Rust-Oleum 1903830 Frosted Glass 11-Ounce Spray, Frosted Glass to frost the glass and hide the bulb completely. It looks like a brand new lamp! Please view the images I uploaded.

GLASS FROSTING STEPS (should go without saying, but be careful with sharp glass. It tends to be, uh... sharp):

1Remove bulb.

2On inside of light, carefully bend metal tabs away from glass (just enough to free glass).

3Remove each pane of glass.

4Degrease / clean the glass well and dry with a new, lint-free rag.

5Take them OUTSIDE (well away from things you don't want coated in spray paint, like your car).

6Place them on a small, sturdy piece of cardboard with a small gap between each glass piece.

7Follow instructions on can. I did about 5 wet coats.

8Carry the cardboard inside to dry.

9Re-install glass after paint dries (~ 1 hour). Painted side faces INWARD towards bulb.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

It still looks like new after several years of exposure to the harsh Virginia elements! When set to Dusk-to-Dawn, you can leave the light switch on and forget it. The dual-brite function is a really nice touch.

IMPORTANT! If you use a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL), only use a DIMMABLE CFL! Most CFLs are not dimmable, so when this fixture attempts to dim the light (by reducing voltage to the bulb), the CFL ballast dies! It happened twice before I realized the reason. Also, because of the way ballasts work, the dual-brite function becomes hardly noticeable.

After spending several hours looking for a Lantern Style lamp with a motion sensor, I found out that the choices as very limited and most of the ones out there available are extremely expensive. After I found this lamp in Amazon at a very low price I was a little worried the product was not going to be of good quality but once I received it I was very pleased with it looks and quality (good materials and craftsmanship). This lamp is a great bargain and looks and works great. Easy to install.

I bought this a couple of years ago for a vacation rental home. It looks very nice and I really like the way it worksthe light comes on at dusk and stays on at a low level, brightening if something triggers the motion detector. After a few hours it goes off and then is still activated by the motion detector until dawn. The only problem I had with it was I stupidly put a non-dimmable compact fluorescent bulb in it which flickered when dimmed. Now I use a 40 watt incandescent bulb in it which provides plenty of light. Since dimmable compacts are available now I plan to try one in it.

Bought two of these through Amazon about 9 months ago. Both were configured to turn on at sunset and turn off at sunrise. A couple days ago a bulb on one of them went bad. After replacing the bulb with, the fixture no longer works as before. It stays on 100% of the time.

Long story short after tinkering with it for a weekend, I emailed the manufacturer and got a quick response back stating multiple reasons for unit going bad. Coincidentally the email states that a power surge or a bulb failure could permanently damage the unit something their own support website conveniently fails to mention.

If you buy this product, better make sure a.) your bulbs don't burn out and b.) your power never surges. It looks to me that the company engineers failed to account for those two factors during circuit design.

The only PRO about the product is that it looks better than those other motion sensing units you get at those major home improvement stores.

BTW. The other unit is still working... not sure for how long.

---4/24/12 Update ----

After contacting the manufacturer via email and providing the Amazon receipt they shipped two new units. Great customer service! One of the original units is still working as expected.

Bought these 2 years ago for our house at the beach and they already need to be replaced. They corroded so badly, they are falling off the house! I'm annoyed because before I spent all that money for them (I bought 10) I wanted to make sure they would withstand the elements so close to the ocean. I contacted the company and was told that they would not rust or corrode. Not true.... now they all need to be replaced. I ordered two of these Sea Gull Outdoor Lanterns with brushed stainless steel finish to replace two fixtures that rusted. They arrived quickly and look really good. The specifications said the material is aluminum. So, if they are brushed stainless steel over aluminum, why does a magnet stick? Yes, we did a magnet test. So, although they are beautiful at the moment, time will tell. Stay tuned...

Today is August 30, 2013. We have had these lanterns for over a year and they still look great!

We bought two of these lights to flank our garage on our Cape Cod House. They were advertised as stainless steel but the reality is that they are not. The stainless finish delaminated entirely within the first year (it looks like aluminum underneath) and the criss-cross brackets simply rusted. By the second year (season really not even a full two years more 18 months) they were so bad that my wife just could not stand it any longer and we replaced them with a non Sea Gull brand. Sea Gull now says that these fixtures are not intended to be used within a mile of the water. No where do they say his in heir advertising OR on the packaging. It's just an excuse for a shoddy product that they don't want to admit to nor stand behind. DO NOT BUY THIS FIXTURE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE THAT IS OUTDOOR RELATED!

I bought two of these for a remodel. They look very nice up close, and from a distance. Not the typical brass carriage-style fixture. The bonus for me was that it could take a 100 watt bulb, and it does throw a lot of light, especially with a clear bulb. It's a mystery to me why so many fixtures are top rated at 60 watts when security should dictate more light.

The Sea Gull packing box said "improved". I'm not sure what was improved, but the fixture's metal parts are quite thin and lightweight. The seeded glass globe is pretty, but fragile. The lip edge is rough, and made it a bit of a challenge to seat it in the fixture to line up with the little screws. One screw hole in the metal was larger than necessary, so it doesn't really "screw" in to hold the globe. On that fixture, it was particularly difficult to get lined up, and I broke part of of the lip edge because I couldn't get equal holding pressure from all the screws. Oops. I suppose I should see about getting that replaced.

One other comment is the the arch piece holds the metal portion so close to the wall mount plate that small fingers are needed to get the decorative screw over the fixture mounting bolt. It should arc just a bit further than it does now.

To summarize, it's a very good looking fixture, but don't be surprised by its insubstantial feel.

Of the 7 work lights that I ordered 3 did not work. They have a feature called soft touch that allows the user to switch between spot mode and work light. The problem I have had is that the switching is too sensitive and the light constantly changes between modes making usage very difficult. I have a couple of units that work well and I like them very much. Other problems I have had would be automatic mode switching or flashing, one unit fried inside, one unit turns on sometimes.

I also don't like the lack of battery power indication on the flashlight.

Excellent combination of flash and work light. It seems pretty durable. My only complaint is that when the charge drops a bit, the light becomes unstable and will flicker or become unstable.

While I am irked by the fact that they are made in China, I have to say they are a great value. They cost less than any one part that might have repaired the old Hubble wall packs that they replaced.

They even included a new bulb. The housing is all metal and they have glass lenses that won't yellow with age.

I am very pleased so far.

This lamp is gorgeous in a minimalistic, modern, clean, semi-industrial fashion. It was easy to assemble, gives a great quality of light through the shade, and, even better, is height adjustable. The little lever on the side is functional and gives quite a bit of variation in height. It seems as if you get at least a foot, if not more, of variation in height the lamp can be set at. The chrome is shiny and looks great. The shade is a nice vanilla/white hue. The shade is a bit wide though, so check the dimensions of where you want to locate it before you order. It fits where we wanted, but I looked at the measurements and was still a little surprised when we got it set up. Not that it looks bad. The proportion of shade to lamp is perfect. Just the shade does have a larger diameter than is common. The shade is perfect height to black light going right into your eyes while walking by it or sitting near it, but still lets a very nice quality of light out the top and bottom. I'm really, really pleased with this product. I always worry when ordering something like this online, but I am incredibly happy. Easy assembly, great finish, great light, looks better in person. Very happy! Goes perfect with the matching table lamp too! We got both, and again, so happy we did. (If you read my review for the table version, it's the same cut and pasteBut I feel the same about both lamp versions. They are both great)

I received this lamp as a gift. The shade is massive and prevented the lamp from fitting into the corner where I needed it to go. The shade is also a weird upside down type that balances across the lamp under the light bulb rather than screwing into place on top of it like a normal lamp. So I cannot replace the shade with a smaller one. I wish I could return this lamp but again it was ordered for me as a gift so I guess I'm going to have to donate it and buy a new lamp. Make sure you check the dimensions and make sure you have plenty of room to house this lamp and its gigantic shade before you buy because it is very difficult to customize it to your space.

When the small box arrived I couldn't believe 2 fairly large lamps were inside.

I thought I must have ordered smaller lamps than I had thought. However, there

ARE two large lamps in the tiny box. The lamp itself comes in three pieces. They are

all connected by the cord so it's just a matter of screwing them together not a big deal.

The excess cord is wrapped around itself and is difficult to get unwound.

What really surprised me was that the shade has to be assembled. It comes in four pieces and the metal is brass colored (I don't think the description mentioned thisI'd rather have brushed nickel).

I have never assembled a lamp shade before and was a little intimidated by the thought.

I looked over the instructions and figured it out and was able to get them together. Once completed the lamps are large and very nice looking. It took me probably close to an hour to assemble the two lamps and probably another 15 minutes to clean up the mess. The lamps are tightly packed in styrofoam and getting them out of the packing gets small pieces of styrofoam all over the place.
