I ordered this lamp because I was looking for something unique for my desk. The lamp came well packaged and in perfect working order. The lights adjust in different directions so they provide a variety of focal points. The only reason I did not give this lamp 5 stars is because the halogen bulbs that came with the lamp cast a yellowish light. I was hoping that the light would be more clear as some of my halogens have been in the past. I intend on looking for some replacement bulbs that have a more natural light. I would recommend this lamp to anyone who doesn't need a lot of light but wants to add a touch whimsy to their decor.

I needed a desk light for my office and my hope was this light would offset the need for me to use the high discharge florescent ceiling lights. The faint "zinging" noise and glare associated with florescent ceiling lights bothers me. The 3M Task Lamp adds a comfortable extra "dimension" of light to my immediate desk space. I do not understand the physics behind this technology but the spectrum of light produced by the Task Lamp is genuinely comfortable on the eyes.

My primary disappointment is this light is not bright enough. You need to have your material directly under the shade for it to be effective. It covers my desk-area but for example; if I'm reading something and lean back in my chair, it is not bright enough to continue reading in a reclined position. This is especially challenging when working at night. I have found my best application for this light is daytime use with the ceiling lights off and additional natural light coming through my window. At night I must use supplemental lighting.

My other disappointment is the feel of the material and mechanics in the power switch. The majority of the light is plastic. It is very light-weight and just does not compare to the finish and integrity of the twenty year old drafting lamp it replaced. The power button is glossy plastic. It has moderate wiggle and it clicks into place in a way that seems to echo cheap quality.

On the positive sideFor such a lightweight lamp it is well balanced and not prone to tippingeven when the arm is extended far from the base. The light never gets hot, it does not produce any "hum or zing" and although the locking switch (holding the shade at the desired angle) is plastic, it tightens with consistency and securely. Finally, the lamp does not look cheap. It looks metallic and modern. It has a low cross-profile and so it is minimally intrusive when people are standing opposite my desk speaking with me.

In summary, this is a good "Task Lamp." The polarizing filter technology is legitimate and the lamp will complement any modern or contemporary office. I feel the cost of the lamp should be less expensive given the entire unit is made mostly of plastic. Finally, this lamp does not discharge a great volume of light. For reading, writing, typing, et cetera it is only adequate in the immediate area of your desk or work bench.

Would not recommend this product. On the plus side, it is a good task lighting lamp (worth 5 stars). However, the heat from the lamp burned (roasted) the plastic/ceramic above the bulb after about two years of use. The engineers in China have yet to make a decent task lighting lamp. The heating problem could possibly be corrected by an air vent to dissapate overheating. I am very surprised that a company like 3M who sells the product does not realize this.

3M Polarizing Light Lamps do exactly what they say, reduce strain on your eyes. Normal light is what is called 'unpolarized', that is, light waves are erratic and the eye has to strain to see them. 3M's lamps polarize the light, filtering out waves not of a certain orientation. Indeed, having this lamp for about 1-2 years, I find the lamp still gives out a strong light, without the strain on the eyes you would associate with this lamp.

Try it, you won't regret it. The only gripe I have is that the tightener to hold the lamp in place has slackened a little, requiring some propping up to get the angle of light I desire, but other than that, its been a good servant to me.

I'm a full-time proofreader, so my work requires excellent lighting. I enjoyed using the 3M glare-reducing task light for the last three years: it definitely reduces eye strain and provides a very crisp and balanced light. I was completely satisfied until I started smelling burning plastic this week. The white film around the bulbs had melted! How long have I been unwittingly breathing in these fumes?! It's simply not worth the health risk to buy this lamp again.

I chose this mostly because there wasn't a lot similar to it, and it was inexpensive. I've installed a variety of lighting fixtures, but the mounting design on this is the least sensible. Due to the design, it was very difficult to the get the fixture mounted tightly against the wall, and I finally stopped at "good enough, it at least won't fall". The arms that extend from the base were not all symmetrical when I opened the box either. Not enough to send it back, but enough to have me tugging and pulling on them to line them up. Also, like all bulbs of this kind, there is a little white washer you unscrew to put the glass sconce on, then screw down over the glass sconce to keep it in place. One of these was jammed and could not be removed. Beyond these kinks, the design is pleasing to the eye for what it cost.

Ordered two of these fixtures for same bathroom. First 2 arrived with shattered globes. When replacement fixtures arrived, one was scratched badly and the other was a complete different color from what was ordered. No way could I use the two in the same room. Will not order from this manufacturer again. Very disappointing.

The picture appears that the glass portion is clear glass, which is what I wanted. When it arrived the glass was a deep amber and does not go with my decor at all. I really like this lamp and I didn't have the problem of the glass being amber instead of clear. I bought the lamp not caring if it was amber or clear glass, though. It was clear, and it really is a sharp looking lamp and works great as a reading lamp. It seems very sturdily built. I hope it lasts the 14 years my last lamp like this lasted.. these lamps screw in at the base and it is a common breaking point after 10+ years.. if you want a lifetime lamp you'll have to spend a lot more money at one go and get a lamp that is pre-assembled. :)

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because the lamp is a little wobbly. The rubbed bronze looks very expensive. The glass is kind of amber-colored, so if amber isn't your thing, you might want to think twice.

This is the perfect garden light. I live in Florida where the growing season is in the winter when there is the least amount of daylight. This light is very bright and functions exactly as advertised. When mounted about seven feet above ground level, it's perfect for lighting up a 15x25-foot area. However, it's essential that you let the battery charge for about five full days under sunny skies before using the light. Otherwise, it won't have a full charge and the light will go dim very quickly, as though the battery is dead. With a full charge, my light has worked great for the past month. I'll post more later if that changes. In all fairness, I must state that when I believed I had a defective battery and contacted Hardware World (the Amazon seller), I got fantastic customer service. I now have complete confidence that Hardware World will back up their products, just as Amazon.com has always done for me.

By the way, this light does NOT function on two AA batteries, as stated in the specs. It actually uses a Nickel-Metal Hydride battery.

I read many of the reviews before ordering this lamp. I thought the person who mentioned the rocker switch used to turn it on and off was really picky. I decided to go ahead and get it.

The lamp looks just as how it is described in other reviews. It is built pretty well. The light is bright enough. The lamp looks good.

But, the reviewer who mentioned the roller switch on the cord was right. That switch hangs down so far that it is hard to reach. And so many times when you want to turn it on, you are groping around down the cord to try to find that switch.

And, I think the lamp is just not weighted well. I can't tell you how mny times it has fallen off the nightstand or the desk. To its credit, it hasn't failed after any of these falls, though each time I think it will be the last time.

I think a light that looks and performs like this one would be better off with a telescoping arm so that it balances better. Of course it will probably cost more money.

I'm really big on LED lights to the extent that I've purchased numerous components at DealExtreme and made three LED reading lamps around the house. I've also purchased a few less expensive LED lamps in the past few years.

I was quite excited to have the chance to evaluate this a finished LED desk lamp. I'm sorry to say I'm only impressed by the brightness and color of the light. It's a miss on several other levels.

Illumination: 9/10 Very bright, much like a high intensity (Tensor) desk light and well diffused. Color is warm but not excessively so. I checked it with my P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor and ooopsit consumes 6 watts of power, not 3. Not a dealbreaker, of course.

Quality: 5/10 The finish of the base is quite good almost looking like a block of stone. The base rattles. The chromed joints at either end of the arm have noticable scratches and dings from assembly. The arm joints are nice and tight but the arm is quite wobbly and I had to take the base apart to tighten the nut. The base, as it turns out, is stamped sheet metal with a couple of thick iron plates for heft. From the outside the finish is decent There are four plastic plates that wiggle around and then there is a piece of velvet with adhesive that seals the whole deal.

Appearance: 4/10 You can't really see the design of the head very well in the picture. The head, arm and base of the lamp are a bluish metallic paint with very large metal flakes. I'd suggest that this would have looked a lot better if the arm and head were metallic instead of painted. The head, base, arm, upper and lower arm joints have no consistent design theme other than the paint. I get the impression someone designed this by pulling random parts out of a bin. A more angular head, like the base, would have been more balanced aesthetically

Design: 2/10. Why couldn't they have put a switch on the base or head instead of this cheapo switch on the power cord? Why does the head tilt only on one axis? However, the biggest flaw was that they have a piece of frosted glass over the LED the edge of the glass is visible and ends up being bright to the point of distraction not something you want on your desk in your field of view. I was able to "fix" this by removing the two small phillips screws that held it in. The LED is still very diffused, so it really wasn't necessary im my opinion.

Looking through some other offerings, I think the PRISM TL-4300GR Energy Star LED Desk Lamp with Anti-Glaring Filter, Grey or the LED Task Lamp from Destination Lighting might be worth a look.

I like the compactness and design of the lamp. It is doing a great job where I have it. I am going to move it around and try it at different places. I think it would make an excellent desk lamp for the kids as well.

Pro's:

-It's most favorable aspect to me is it's compact design. It is so easy to move around and put where you want it. The tilting and swiveling head make it real easy to position and aim. The base is only approx 9"x4.5" and is very thin yet substantial enough to prevent the light from tipping over.

-The light color and intensity are very nice and pleasing.

-The granite type texture and finish with chrome joints look very nice.

Con's:

-Would be nice to have the color spectrum and light output listed on the box or in the item description. I am sure a lot of people would like to know this upfront.

-The packaging and instructions have an overall slightly on the cheap feel. This was definitely not made in the USA.

-Not sure how long it is going to last before the articulating joints loose their holding power. There doesn't seem to be any way to tighten them up. This may never happen as it seems to work well enough. But this could happen if it was placed in an area where it saw constant adjusting and positioning.

-For the price of approx $55 currently, it would have been nice to have a dimmer/on/off knob on the base instead of an inline cord switch.

Overall I am very happy with this desk lamp. If it were priced at $30 then this would definitely be a great purchase. At it's current price I think it is still a good purchase, but leaves room for the competition to provide a comparable model and better price. The price should come down over time as LED's are becoming a more mature technology.

Of the 7 work lights that I ordered 3 did not work. They have a feature called soft touch that allows the user to switch between spot mode and work light. The problem I have had is that the switching is too sensitive and the light constantly changes between modes making usage very difficult. I have a couple of units that work well and I like them very much. Other problems I have had would be automatic mode switching or flashing, one unit fried inside, one unit turns on sometimes.

I also don't like the lack of battery power indication on the flashlight.

Excellent combination of flash and work light. It seems pretty durable. My only complaint is that when the charge drops a bit, the light becomes unstable and will flicker or become unstable.

After installing track lighting with halogens in my kitchen (replaced a box with fluorescent tubes), one track failed after a year or so. I was unable to diagnose the problem and had an electrician come out in case I had done something stupid/dangerous. I was told that the stock transformer had failed, and that it had been at maximum capacity.

I bought this item, upgrading from 150W to 200W. It fit in the same cramped box as the original and has worked flawlessly. I am happy in that do-it-yourself-and-impress-your-wife special kind of way.

I've tried several LED bulbs and these are the closest to a soft-whit incandescent bulb you will find. I'm very picky! You have to look closely to determine they are LED. There is absolutely NO blue hue to them. They are worth the price. I would buy these again in the future may even order another case to keep as back up!!
