The mounting holes didn't line up with my ceiling electrical box (other fixtures work fine with them), so I had to drill an extra hole. Other than this, installation was easy.

Ordered two, one arrived with a broken florescent bulb; The seller sent replacement bulb immediately with no hassles; was a nice to deal with them.

I replaced old fixtures with this, because it is in front of my movie projector screen; the low profile is what attracted me to it (was hard to find bright wide angle light that doesn't hang down further from ceiling).

I already had several of these throughout the house, so I knew I would like it! This takes up to a 40 watt bulb. I found that for most locations a 25 watt bulb is more than adequate. This latest lamp was installed in a small hallway. In this location the 25 watts put out way too much light. I swapped in a 15 watt bulb -much better. It is nice that this lamp uses a very widely available size of bulb that can be obtained in various wattages.

The quality of the lamp is very good. It comes with a very long cord which really isn't needed if you are plugging in to an outlet behind the picture. In fact it takes some doing to tightly wind the cord so that it sits behind the painting without lifting it away from the wall. I suppose I could shorten the cord.

I ordered this light to supplement my kitchen undercabinet lighting. Specifically, it's right above the counter where I have my laptop much of the time. The light is very bright and exceeds my expectations there. The swiveling back-and-forth light head is nice as it is nice to be able to direct the light back away from my laptop to avoid the glare on the screen. If I'm doing something without the computer, I tilt it forward. It doesn't swivel very far, only about 20-30 degrees, but it's enough to direct the light where you need it.

Installation was very easy (well, a contractor installed it, but I was there when he did and it was really simple). I needed a hardwire light, but this light can apparently be either hardwired OR plugged in. I don't think the product details were very clear on this feature. You can also link it to another similar light fixture to cut down on the amount of wiring, but I haven't needed this feature.

The color is good because it is less conspicuous as an undercabinet light.

Yes, I would recommend this light. It's quite fascinating to look at the LEDs when they're not lit because they're so small. It's hard to believe that they produce so much light for such low wattage. By my calculation, I could install 12 of these gems and still use less electricity than the four flourescent fixtures that I used to have under my cabinets. The light is more directional than the fluourescent, but that's fine for my purposes.

Review of LAMPLIGHT FARMS Metropolitan Oil Lamp Sold in packs of 4

I've collected kerosene lamps for years and I've owned one of these lamps for several years as part of the collection. The quality/fit & finish of this lamp leaves something to be desired. If beauty is your primary reason for buying oil lamps, then this one isn't going to be your prized piece. It does have a rather unique "lighthouse" look to it but the quality of the materials used isn't the best.

I also use my lamp collection for actual lighting on a romatic evening or when the power grid goes down. For practical purposes, this lamp is more durable than many other kerosene/oil lamps. The pictures speak for themselves--the chimney can't fall off and won't be easily cracked. In comparison to other more common chimneys, the glass in this one is thicker. Also, as you can see from the photo, it's encased in a cage. The fuel is stored safely in the base and will not leak out (unless you invert the lamp, perhaps).

The base screws off and the fuel is poured in, then the bottom of the wick is fed into the hole in the top of the base and the base is screwed back on. Once that's done, the fuel is safely inside a steel can screwed to the bottom of the lamp (the base). Unfortunately, there is no rubber gasket around the filler hole (which I would prefer to have). I still have not had any oil leaks with it. The glass is held in place by an aluminum ring at the top of the lamp and it's held firmly by a steel spring. This allows the glass to be raised for lighting the wick, then lowered down and held in place to completely encase the flame.

The worst part of this whole lamp in my opinion is the ring at the very top of the lamp. It looks like it's supposed to be a ring that you could attach some line to in order to hang the lantern. The ring is VERY soft and is also split. Any attempt to use this ring to bear the weight of this lamp would be a disasterous failure. If you replace that ring with something more reliable (like a key ring) you may be able to hang this lamp. To tear this down for cleaning, etc. (field strip) you really only need your bare hands. With one small phillips head screwdriver, you can completely disassemble this lamp into it's many parts. It's a pretty simple design.

I have found that if you hold this lamp around the base, you can carry it around the house without getting burned, leaking any oil, or damaging the chimney. Like I said, for using around the house during a power outage, this one is reasonably safe. Unfortunately, due to the small wick and the rippled, decorative glass it's not exceptionally bright. With the correct fuel (kerosene or Lamplight Farms Medallion lamp oil--NOT the Ultra Pure candle oil!) this can be about as bright as 2 candles.

*NOTE: After lighting, keep the flame small (the size of a birthday candle flame) and let the glass heat up for 5 minutes before turning the flame higher. This will help you avoid cracking the glass.

It's not as nice as having a Dietz or Feuerhand lantern in your hand during a blackout but it's also about $10 less expensive than those brands.

Mine was a gift but I'm considering buying a second one. If you're on a budget and you'd like a reasonably durable oil lamp, this might be a good choice. It may not be as bright or reliable as a battery powered portable lamp, but it's certainly less expensive to use.

Installation (light bulbs facing up):

The mounting plate and back plate do not sit flush because of the electrical connectors. This fixture DOES NOT have a hole to stuff the wires back into the wall. We had to tape all the wires to the back plate before we could mount it to the wall plate (and the still get in the way).

You can see in the picture where the circle screw covers are. These two screws are the only thing holding the fixture (which is 36" long) to the back plate resulting in the top of the fixture not sitting flush on the wall. All the weight of the socket & shades force the top to stick out slightly.

Don't screw bulbs or lamp shade brackets too tightly, this will cause the socket to spin making it a pain to unscrew a light bulb (this is common for fixtures with shades)

Look:

Rope-like design at the bottom of the lights look flush in the picture, but they stick out. It doesn't look bad but it threw me when I looked at the fixture for the first time thinking "did they send the right fixture?"

Platinum Mist color is pretty. It's not a normal finish, looks like the "mist" is painted on brushed nickel. But it you touch it, you can tell the platinum base was probably painted on too. Haven't been able to find ANY towel bars that match this finish :(

Lighting:

Originally mounted fixture with the bulbs pointed to the floor thinking it would provide better illumination by bouncing off the mirrors; however, the shades are very large and came down covering about an inch of the mirror. We reinstalled pointing to the ceiling, and it looks great. Our previous fixtures were each 6-bulbs, and these 4-bulb fixtures (with 60W bulbs installed/100W Max) provide great lighting even with a dark brown paint on the walls.

Packaging:

One of the boxes arrived as though it was returned and repackaged incorrectly leaving me with two broken shades and one cracked. HomeClick responded to my email in less than 4 hours and I received the replacements within a week. A+ for customer service!

Summary:

The manufacture should lower the regular price to $100/$120, lessening the expectation of the buyers who think they just purchased a "high quality" product because the caught a great sale. $60 for a 4-light, 36" vanity fixture is a heck of a deal! They don't "look" cheap (even with the top not lying flush) but they also don't look like we splurged and bought $250/fixture. The fixtures add a nice touch to our master bathroom and can't complain for the price I paid :)

Like the dual light level.

Unit does get warm and you notice it when you reach for the surface mounted control, but not hot enough to worry or burn.

This, and the other sizes available, are the best undercabinet lighting you can have. Unlike competing products, the xenon light is cool to the touch, long-lasting, consumes little power, has a low/high switch and the light is very nice and warm. The only problem I ran into is with dimming, a string of these in the kitchen did not take to dimming very well. OK, so the dimmer was replaced with a switch and the low/high switches on each unit are used to achieve the light level we want.

These are really very nice, we are pleased with the results in our house. You will be too.

The picture shows a round base like most residential floor lamps, the actual product has 4 wheels on 21-inch centers!! It takes up a LOT of floor space. Also, the extension tube has flakes of corrosion or manufacturing slag so every time I raise or lower it rust falls out the bottom. I need to take it apart and oil it, then somehow seal up the bottom of the tube to stop the debris. It's cheaply made and not as pictured. Shame on Amazon, who sold this directly. If you click on similar products, the small "similar items" photos don't match the larger photo on the product page, so you'll never know what you're really getting.

It is fine for a room light, but the ventilation holes at the top mean that anyone dealing with glare problems can not use this as a task light because all those little beams of light will make focus impossible. They do help illuminate a room at night, though, and it makes a good plant light.

Do note when purchasing that the chrome one has a flat base while the dull one has wheels.

The neck is not very long so do not expect it to be an equivalent replacement for a Giraffe medical light.

As a task light this is a great product. I particularly like the instant-on capability. Many of these you have to wait on the bulb to kick in after it flutters a couple of times--not this one! On the down side, the handle on the cover over the magnifier is difficult to grasp and hold. It should be larger or shaped better for grasping. The magnifier is not of great quality. It is difficult to focus close work compared to most other similar lamps we have used.

I bought this lamp because it was like one my gramma had in the hallway. The colors on this product are vibrant and room changing. However, the fit between the finial and the shade is not perfect and so not tight and one of the bulb holders is a bit below the shade. It is still an excellent buy, we'll wrapped and intact. I enjoy it every time the lamp is lighted.

In spite of the two less than glowing reviews, I decided to go with the American Lighting xenon pucks. I needed a total of 20 pucks (five 4-packs). Do to limited quantity available here, I had to purchase several packs from another vendor. Thus, I have multiple sources to derive data. So far (2-weeks), I am pleased with the results. Granted, the bulbs may start failing, but every light worked the first time, the fixtures are no less quality than to be expected, and they were relatively easy to install. Actually, the only way it could have been easier is if I would have installed them before the cabinets went up! I spaced them at 9" on-center, and at about 18" above the countertop I have very even light distribution and to a desirable level of brightness. Although I did not take any measurements, the boss likes it (Think wife!).

I understand that these are not very expensive items, but they simply fail at an unacceptable rate. Two out of the six I purchased have now failed. What's worse is that the failure mechanism is not repairable. I took one apart to see what went wrong, after all it was not working anyway. I found that the socket that the bulb plugs into is so poorly designed, that eventually (a few months after installation) it will fail, even if you don't touch it I mean the socket, not the bulb. This is poorly engineered garbage. Don't waste your money. If it was free, I wouldn't pay the shipping. As an aside, while they are working, the 20 watt xenon light is great for undercounter kitchen lighting, it's just the fixture from American (made in China) Lighting that blows.

August, 2009 update: I was sent two extras as replacements so I now own 8 units. Only two are still working. Much credit to the engineers at American Lighting for creating such a reliable failure mechanism.

DON'T BUY ANYTHING THIS COMPANY MANUFACTURES. We spent hours installing two sets of these, and a month later the first bulb blew. Went back to the store ($2 each way on the subway) and bought a few bulbs. After hours of trying unsuccessly to replace the tiny bulb (could not get it into the tiney socket), the two of us gave up. Three months later the second bulb died and we tried again, to no avail. We finally just unplugged the stupid thing. The second fixture has been burning for two years with no problems. EVERY American Lighting product I have bought has been of AWFUL quality. I have tried flourescent fixtures and bulbs, and their bulbs burn out faster than incandescent!! -they should last for years, not weeks or months.

I installed eight of these two years ago. On installation I drilled holes for recessed mounting with a hole saw. Although I am a careful workman, anyone who has used hole saws knows that they do not cut exactly on size but sometimes will be 1/16 or so over. These lights don't like that and the poor design of the retainer device makes them a loose fit in the hole. Since then I have found that the bulbs are a smaller size than the standard and thus harder to find. Further, you must find xenon bulbs, which are less common than the halogen ones, because the halogen ones burn to hot. Finally, in time the heat causes the plastic bezel to become brittle and crumble when you try to remove it to replace the bulb.

In sum, DO NOT buy plastic puck lights if you're using xenon or halogen bulbs. While plastic might be OK for LEDs, it is not OK for the hotter xenon and halogen bulbs. All metal, 12 volt, puck lights are available here on Amazon and I'm going to pull these and replace them with the all metal ones that I should have used in the first place.

I have had these lights for 3.5 years now and they are still going strong. I flush mounted them and they look great. Everyone was using halogens with low voltage but I didn't want to deal with transformers. I would have no problem buying these again. I dont know what the bad reviews are about. If I were doing it again today I might go with one of the LED options out there, but I have no complaints with these.
