Review of Normande Lighting JM1-884 71-Inch 100-Watt Incandescent Torchiere

Normande Lighting JM1-884 71-Inch 100-Watt Incandescent Torchiere Floor Lamp with 40-Watt Side Reading Lamp

Ordered this mainly as a reading lamp. It looks nice. It was really easy to put together. And one thing I love is, though the on-off switch is at the top of the lamp, there is a separate switch on the cord that I can keep by my side, thus allowing for changing, turning on, or turning off, from my recliner.

Don't let people trying to sell those "sunshine" lamps fool you. I tried one from Hammacher Schlemmer. Paid a good $40.00 more, and it was UN-USABLE. The glare on the TV and on reading material made me miserable and I had to have the light shade turned down completely to keep from blinding anyone else in the room. Check out something simple like this, instead, if you just want to be able to see to read. I've gotten lots of compliments on its looks, too.

I had bought this lamp due to not having enough space in my room for a table lamp and it definitely works well. The frosted shade protects from any glare on my television and it lights my room perfectly. The only problem with this lamp is that I had bought it with the expectation that it could dim using a 3-way bulb, however it is not capable of doing so. The product features state:

# Rotary 3-way switch on torchiere and rotary switch on reading lamp

# Uses 100W Type A 3-way bulb and 40W Type A bubl Not included

However there is neither a rotary switch on the reading lamp nor an actual 3 way switch. Don't get me wrong, this lamp was worth the purchase due to the Amazon Prime eligibility and cheap price, although I wish that the feature description actually matched the product I had received.

The glass shades are beautiful and the metal work is also very nice. The only things I would change would be to give the reading light it's own switch and give the torchiere a 3-way option. It has a nice, heavy weight, decorative base. I thought the price was very reasonable, too.

Honest reviews on Normande Lighting JM1-884 71-Inch 100-Watt Incandescent Torchiere

I often work late at night and needed a "mother-daughter" style torchiere that would completely light up the office when I needed, but also switch over to just a focused lamp to see my keyboard/desk when everyone else is asleep in the household. Being on a tight budget, I looked at Walmart, Lowes, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target etc. and couldn't find a nice one under $100 that I actually liked. When I saw the gorgeous swirling leaves and additional golden leaf details on the base of this lamp I was even more thrilled with my $60 purchase. The matte dark brown stand twisted easily together in minutes and is nicely weighted. The shades assembled with a twist as well. A maximum 40w bulb for the smaller lamp was already provided (the main bulb, you buy yourself, not to exceed 150w). The 3 way switch clicks 3x's to provide lighting for either the small bendable lamp, main torchiere, or both on the third click. Aside from the lamp being initially back ordered for 3.5 weeks, I'm really happy with this purchase and feel it was worth the wait.

Before I bought a floor lamp I wanted a torchiere lamp with a side reading lamp that had to be CLASSY looking and STURDY.

So, upon reading the reviews, I took notice that a reviewer commented that the base was sturdy and other

reviewers noted how nice it looked. However, one reviewer wrote that it was not a 3-way, not dimmable.

Well, I took the purchase plunge and decided upon this particular torchiere lamp.

When it arrived, I couldn't be more pleased about how well it was packed.

I also noticed how sturdy the base seemed to be.

It only took 15 minutes for my husband to put it together and I was very pleased

how well it looked and blended in with my decor. Yes, this lamp is CLASSY looking

and STURDY.

I take the 3-way switch to mean that the lamp switches to the upper light on, both upper

and reading light on or just the reading light on. So, technically, this lamp has

a 3-way lighting switch---just not dimmable, but anyone could purchase a plug-in dimmer

if so wanted.

There is only one feature that I would change with this lamp: the light switch would be

by the base of the reading lamp. It is somewhat of an inconvenience to get off the couch

and reach way up by the top of the pole to shut the light off/on, but it

is still worth the purchase. But because of the switch location, I rated it a 4.

A reviewer noted that the lighting was not suitable or harsh. What I did was buy LED lightbulbs,

not particularly for the lighting look, but more as a way of conserving electricity. Be forwarned

that LED bulbs are not cheap---anywhere between $5 to $40.00, depending upon the wattage and style of

the bulb. However, these bulbs do emit a warmer and brighter glow than fluorscent or the incandscent

lightbulbs.

Nevertheless, this torchiere is still a CLASSY and STURDY lamp. I just love the way the wire leaves

wrap around the glass shades.

After shopping around, I couldn't find a torchiere lamp that I liked any more than this

one and at an affordable price too. Similiar lamps have sold elsewhere for between $100-200.00--

and without the artistic wire leaf pattern around the shades.

I highly recommend this lamp.

I clamped this puppy onto my desk so that I could work on my art projects. Originally, I was hoping to obtain a more natural light (combining the fluorescent bulb with one of those "full-spectrum" bulbs) but it didn't work out the way I'd hoped. However, that small issue aside, I've got some other points I'd like to make:

Pros:

1) Solidly constructed. The springs, arms, and shade are tough. I wouldn't use the parts to build a roll-cage for a 4x4, but for holding it's own weight, bumping into it occasionally, and breaking it down to put in storage, it's plenty rugged (Note: I haven't actually put it into storage since I got it, but I wouldn't hesitate!).

2) With a nice, metal clamp at the base, this lamp stays put. Other articulating lamps I've had tended to wriggle off the edge of my desk after 20 or so rotations of the lamp about the base. Not this one. I clamped it to my desk 7 months ago, articulated the heck out of it on regular basis since, and I haven't had to re-tighten it once. Sweet.

3) You don't lose and outlet with this lamp because it's got one at that base. I plug my laptop into it and I plug other electronic devices requiring A/C power. Be still, my beating heart.

4) This thing's got a vicious, 40" reach and it stays where you put it. No sagging; not even a slow droop. 40" reach. Damn, where do I sign?

Cons:

1) You know that base outlet I talked about in (3) above? Yeah, about that: it rotates with the lamp. If you plan on rotating the lamp about the base beyond 90 degrees while having something stationary plugged in, it might harsh your buzz a bit to know that the prongs (of the electronic device that you've got plugged in) could get bent outta shape and ripped out. It happened to me while I was rotating the lamp about the base. Also, the cord of that electronic device you've got plugged in could also get wrapped around the base, hindering the movement of the lamp that happened to me too. I wept quietly but nobody was around to see me.

2) Like all fluorescent lamps, you got that annoying hold-the-button-in-the-on-position-and-then-let-go mechanism to switch it on. This means you gotta hold the lamp head in place if you're going to turn on the fluorescent part. Not a deal-breaker.

3) Like the other reviewers, I got some sketchy packaging from the seller, Shoplet. Everything was there, it came in time, and the price was great but something about the way it was packed called to mind a shady, back-alley purchase out the back of a van... ...where you get great deal with no regrets.

This lamp only gets 4 starts because of the cons. However, if those cons don't seem like cons at all, then you got yourself a 5-star product, pal... time to add to cart.

I just received the product today and was very disappointed: the clamp for mounting the lamp was missing as was any instructions/manual and no 100 Watt bulb. The packing by shoplet.com was absolutely unreal: they simply placed a UPS sticker on the outside of the retail box designed to be put on a shelf. Needless to say the trip via UPS obliterated the box and I suspect that is how the clamp and instructions were lost.

Normally the shipper's place the product in a larger box with some bubble wrap.

Now the real kicker: I got a bag of candy from shoplet the day after I ordered packed in a really nice strong box! Somebody has their priorities wrong over there they should spend the money on a decent box instead of overnighting a bag of candies that went in the trash.

Bottom line good light seems strong and well made, but beware of the seller shoplet.com could become shopnot.com.

Best Deals for Ledu L445BK Professional Fluorescent/Incandescent Swing Arm

This has both a circular fluorescent lamp and an incandescent lamp, as part of the shipment. You have an option to turn on either, one at a time, or both together. The finishing looks sturdy and excuisite. It has totally eased my reading and writing experiences, since the light output is very pleasing to the eye. Being a masters student with lots of homework, a full-time employee and with interest in cartooning, this lamp is an indispensible purchase I ever made, and very happy about it.

Honest reviews on Ledu L445BK Professional Fluorescent/Incandescent Swing Arm

This is a great lamp, especially for color work. With both types of light, it makes a real difference in how color appears on paper.

However, as with another reviewer, my lamp arrived with no clamp, no instructions, and no light bulb. How am I supposed to use it if there's no way to attach it to a desk?

Nice, now I have to go out shopping and find a clamp, which is exactly what I wanted to avoid by buying online.

10-14-13 Update:

Caution! They've completely changed this lamp from just a couple of years ago! My old review was no longer valid. The change may have something to do with Amazon selling this lamp rather than Shoplet.

First, the good news...

The new lamp still comes with two lights--a light bulb (19W CFL) ringed by a circline fluorescent bulb (T5 25W 6500K). However, instead of three switches to control the lamp there are now only two On/Off rocker switches--one controls the light bulb and the other controls the circline fluorescent light. This is far more intuitive that the old three-switch system--one switch to turn ON the light bulb, one switch to turn ON the fluorescent and one switch to turn both lights OFF.

The old Ledu lamps were designed to use regular light bulbs. Consequently, CFL bulbs would "peek out" from below the rim of the bell, allowing the last coil or two to shine annoyingly in my eyes. I had to tape cardboard "extension" to the bottom of the "bell" to correct the problem. The new lamp doesn't have this problem. It may look shallower, but it actually completely shrouds CFL bulbs. Nice.

The new lamp seems to have the same great build quality as the older ones, including square-tube supports, metal "V" joints, triangular nut tighteners, and heavy-duty springs--the same basic construction as the lamps I've used every day for the past ~10 years. The lamp has no problems staying fixed at any position it's put in without having to tighten up the nuts at the joints. Also, the new lamps come with metal desk clamps (mount) again, instead of the funky plastic ones Ledu experimented with a few years ago. The plastic mounts functioned fine, but the lamps would bob up and down a tiny bit after their positions were adjusted. This can be unnerving to the uninitiated, especially when the lamp is hovering over something fragile. The measurements for the new lamps are roughly the same:

1. The first arm stands about 22.5", of which, about 3.5" is transformer.

2. The second arm is about 23" long from the "knee" to the middle of the "bell." Add 5" to the outer edge of the bell.

3. Standing straight up vertically (like a streetlight), the light is about 35"-36" off the desk.

4. Pulled horizontally (parallel to the desk), the lamp reaches about 41" to the middle of the bell.

Like all Ledu lamps of the past several years, the base still has a backwards-facing AC socket (9A).

Now the bad news...

You could use 100W incandescent bulbs in the old Lamps, but the new lamps are ONLY rated for CFL bulbs (19W max). The pathetic, single page of instructions did NOT say if was safe to substitute in a "regular" incandescent bulb. I use CFL bulbs, so I didn't bother to look into this. To be clear, this CFL limitation only applies to the BULB portion of the lamp. The circline fluorescent tube has a separate rating (see above).

Overall...

I prefer the new lamp over the older ones. The new 2-switch system is much more intuitive than the old system, the lamp is much brighter than previous models, and I used CFL bulbs, anyway. And the price has only gone up 10% in the past 10 years despite inflation!

-Here's my OLD review for clarity/comparison/posterity...

I have a combination lamp like this one that is 8 years old. Before I bought it, I went through the cheaper swing arm lamps ($) every 2-3 years.

This lamp came with a 22W circline fluorescent tube installed (6400K), but no incandescent bulb. The lamp will take up to a 100W incandescent bulb, which is much higher than the 60W limit imposed by many other cheaper swing arm desk lamps. The springs are stout enough that I was able to install a 100W-equivalent CFL bulb (it protrudes about 1/2 inch below the hood). There are three rocker switches on the top of the lamp. The first one turns the incandescent bulb OFF/ON. The middle rocker supplies main power to the fluorescent bulb, but it won't turn it ON. To turn it on, you must press and hold the third, momentary-type rocker switch for a few seconds before releasing it. Not the simplest of configurations, but easy enough to learn. The lamp also comes with a spare outlet on the base. The outlet faces backwards.

Mounting: Be aware that the transformer housing (the box at the base of the lamp right above the clamp) is positioned mostly aft. That is, you have to have at least ~3.5" clearance between your desk and wall if you want to be able to move the lamp from side to side.

A couple of gripes... 1. The clamp mount is made out of plastic. It will probably last forever, but it feels cheesy compared to the metal mount on my old combo lamp. The plastic mount seems to allow the lamp to rock a tad longer after it has been repositioned--a minor gripe. 2. Shoplet shipped my lamp in its store-display box! When the box arrived it was crushed everywhere that the lamp didn't support it. Thank goodness it's a tough lamp.

One nice thing about Shoplet is that they shipped my lamp very quickly. I received it the day after I ordered it.

03/23/09 Addendum

Someone asked about its height...

Add 5" to the outer edge of the bell.

TWO important notes about this fan. First of all, I love these we have two installed for residential use and they have exactly the modern/industrial look we were going for. Looks exactly like photos. Other reviewers have captured the good and the bad. Here are two observations that I didn't immediately find in other reviews:

1) 1970 called, and it wants its fan control back. SERIOUSLY. The fan control, aka the switch that makes the fan turn on and go 5 different speeds, is a throwback. It's like mounting a VW bus to the wall. Take a look at custom photos to see what I mean. NOTE: the good news is that others are available! Search Amazon for 'westinghouse fan control' for better options. HIGHLY recommend, for ease of install and appearance, that you go with one of these instead. But hey, maybe you miss the 70's and this is your ticket to disco, swinging, and blow. I'm not judging.

2) DO NOT install around children or in any situation where someone might hit their head. This is an industrial fan made of metal. Even at low speeds, it will hospitalize you, I'm quite sure. Careful.

Usually the more stylish, the higher the cost. This fan is a refreshing exception to that rule.

Looks great, easy to install.

It comes with a rather clunky, space-consuming wall-mounted remote. Because the switch governing the ceiling outlet in my place lives in a triple-wide switchplate, I bought an aftermarket ceiling fan control for $20 and installed it in the existing junction box.

I also cut 4 inches off the downrod, as it hung a little low in the room. This required drilling two new holes in the rod to slide the pin through, a minor operation.

Only glitch was that the thing wobbles some on the top speed. I tried switching the blades around in the head, and after two combinations it runs like a gem, with no vibration whatsoever. Highly recommended! I'm buying a second one for my office.

Best Deals for Westinghouse 7861400 Industrial 56-Inch Three-Blade Ceiling Fan

i just installed this fan and i am very satisfied with my purchase. 5 speed options and it's industrial looks are what swayed me into purchasing this ceiling fan. the control housing is pretty large (5"Hx3.25"Lx2.5"D), but has an old school westinghouse look about it. the instructions were pretty straight forward (except wiring the controller took a few extra minutes to figure out. the instructions showed 4 wires coming, but only 2 needed to be plugged in). overall, i'm very happy. quiet operation, nice looks and a cool breeze around the apartment!

Honest reviews on Westinghouse 7861400 Industrial 56-Inch Three-Blade Ceiling Fan

This fan is amazing. It was a breeze to put together and install. It looks amazing and functions well. I ended placing a dimmer on the switch board for different speeds because the one that is supplied is huge and bulky and unattractive. This was our only complaint since we have a mimimalistic decor on our townhouse. I would recommend this item to anyone looking for an inexpensive, modern, ultra-chic fan for any modern/contemporary decor.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Westinghouse 7861400 Industrial 56-Inch Three-Blade Ceiling Fan

This is actually a very elegant fan once installed. The product photo doesn't reflect this, but it has a very nice slender profile and sensible design. The color is actually a very reflective brushed metal finishedfrom a short distance it looks like chrome, so if you are into a retro modern look this does work acceptably. Unlike alot of modern fans that have blades made out of dissimilar materials and need superficial balancing, this fan has metal blades and seems very solid and well-balanced. It isn't quite as silent as some of the other fans in the houseit has a quiet "choppiness" and doesn't flush mount. It also has a large box that provides the multi-speed control with a somewhat vintage Westinghouse look to it. But in a world where modern looking fans without a gimmicky appearance start at $300...it is a gem. Overall, I love it.

Do not waste your money. This items looks great for the first day. That is if it gets to you in one piece. The glitter lamp is really cool when it works. Mine came and the glass is no longer glued to its base and the motor will not start on its own most of the time. It worked for about a day and now its making this horrible noise. And it doesnt sound like an aquarium!!! If your thinking of buying this my suggestion is to just flush the money down the toilet it would be much more entertaining and more bang for your buck than this trash. very poor and cheap construction. I really cant believe Lava Lamp put their name on this cheap product.

Best Deals for Lava Lite 2200 14.5-inch/20 oz. Vortex Glitter Lava Lamp

I purchased two of them. The caps have fallen off both since they are never secured to begin with and one lamp quit working after a few months. They are pretty when they work but it's short lived. I would search for a different manufacturer all together.

Honest reviews on Lava Lite 2200 14.5-inch/20 oz. Vortex Glitter Lava Lamp

I love this in concept and when it works. I bought it as a nightlight for two young sons of a friend (ages 3 and 5) and they thoroughly enjoy it. This can be purchased at Target for $14 so the price here is very inflated. For that price, it is worth it (and makes it easy to return if it stops functioning). I am actually considering buying one for my niece, so I definitely don't hate it! Some of the good and the bad, and the very pretty:

CONS: Out of the box, it is clearly not made for children to operate as it takes patience to get the alignment right. It uses a magentic connection in the base to connect to a magnetic ball in the glass. The glass is not attached to the bottom, so these can get a bit out of sync. The magnet is in the center of the flimsy plate holding the LED lights (in a circle), and all connected by a couple of wires. And not attached or set well into the base. It takes some patience and maneuvering of the magnetic and glass section sections to find alignment. I don't see it having a long life due to flimsy craftmanship, but we've only had it for a week. (I will come back and edit this after a month!)

PROS: Once it gets going, it is truly a delightful glitter display that lights up the wall and ceiling like stars. The colors change through the spectrums of blue, red, and green very primary colors and not the pastel shown in the picture. The boys love it. We keep it on a high shelf where they know to turn it on and off only, and it has worked for a week without needing re-adjusting. The MAJOR positive is that it gives off NO HEAT. It is all electrical for lights and motion, so nothing gets hot to burn the hands of little ones.
