I saw bulbs like this at a local restaurant and was so charmed by their quintessential "cartoon light bulb over the head" look, I just had to have some of my own! For me, keeping them turned down to about a candle's brightness is just rightI'm not after illumination, I want the filament to be an art-element in it's own right, so I keep them on a dimmer and turned down.
These are not rough-duty bulbs at all. The rating of 3000 hrs is an average, meaning some burn longer and some burn for fewer hours. Some tips for extending the life:
-Keep them turned down to about half power. This alone should extend the life by about 3x.
-Never, ever jar the bulb when it is on. The filaments in these bulbs are more delicate than regular bulbs and have more filament suspended from the harp. A hard knock will break a hot filament and prolonged exposure to vibration will eventually weaken the filament where it is held by the harp.
-The squirrel cage and hair-pin filament styles should only be used vertically.
You can also get carbon filament lamps which have an even warmer (oranger) appearance.

This is the coolest lightbulb ever! I know that light bulbs aren't very exciting and rarely do I get excited about something like a lightbulb. However, I was in the hunt for a low wattage lightbulb to use with my vintage industrial light cage that I recently bought from etsy. I needed a low wattage since the lightbulb would be hanging from a cord on the ceiling by itself and everything I had around the house was way too bright and blinding. With everyone from the White House on down complaining about incandescent light bulbs being evil and pushing those CFL's ("Curly Fry Lightbulbs") on us these days, it's refreshing to see one of these illuminating your desk.
First of all, the glow from these is dreamy if you have an antique filled room and need it to look "right".
Second of all (and this is a jab at the enviro-nazis), these are MUCH safer for the environment than CFL's, they do not contain mercury, plastics, etc. Just good old fashioned metal (biodegradable) and glass, two natural elements. If you accidentally drop and break one of these, you don't need a hazmat kit!
I have a vintage radio area and use these to light it. The filaments are not overly bright, and put off a very nice glow. Superb, and real attention getters.
Last year, had some guests over and had one of these bulbs in the overhead light. Guests were fascinated by the "old" lightbulb and they even took pictures of it! By far, the light bulb over our heads was the biggest hit of the night.

This review is for the Bulbrite 132520 25 watt quad loop bulb. This is a great looking vintage style bulb. I have bought other types like the squirrel cage edison bulb and they are great but this is my favorite. The quad loop filament and glass tip on top really sets it off. I ordered one to see if I liked it. I did and then ordered more except this time I ordered the 40 watt version.
A little trick I've been using with all these bulbs: Get one of the screw in light dimmers and you can turn down the brightness easily for a nightlight. These dimmers screw into the lamp socket and then you just screw the bulb into the dimmer. It has a dial to operate the bulb from a barely glowing filament to full brightness. I like to leave it set with the quad loop filament just barely glowing. Makes a good conversation piece.
