One warning for those who plan to install the fixture themselves: unless you have 20' ceilings, you'll need to shorten the length of the cables. There are no instructions on how to do that. The lamp fits into the decor without being obtrusive. Three-way switch is nice for whether I want an accent light or if I want to read in bed. My previous lamp had a dark shade which wasn't that great for reading & this shade gives off a nice calm light. The packaging was secure & the lamp was easy to set up. Very happy with the purchase.

This is really a great product, the Lamp looks great on my computer desk and I love having the radio so convenient.

I plugged it in to charge with my computer and it is still going strong 2 days later.

The security alarm is very penetrating and my dog does NOT love it, but it is a great feature to have, in fact I may have to purchase another one of these to have one in my car as well as at home.

I encourage you to check out all of the DTC life tools, they carry an excellent line of products.

I just got one of these yesterday afternoon, it charged my cell phone outside using only solar power, in about the same time as the ac charger in the house,the tool itself never did get to full charge on solar but since there are not 18 hours of sunlite in a day this is understandable, but even on a half charge, the reading lamp was more than adequate, in fact it outlasted me, in fact used it this morning for doing eectrical soldering of small components for which, it was more than ample.also listend to the FM radio all yesterday afternoon it picked up all the local stations quite clearly, I do not know what I would use the siren for but it does drive my neighbors dogs nuts, so I would have to say that works fine also.

It charged off of my computer very rapidly, I would say this tool is well worth the investment I am going to mail it to a friend of mine who lives off grid and will add her comments in a week or so.

The flashlight is much like the desklamp, far more than merely adequate illumination.

Once again I would reccomend this to anyone who needs this type of tool which is completely self contained, and requires no outside power source.

The hand crank works as advertised,but I would only use this feature in an emergency situation.

I mailed this to my friend in Oklahoma who lives completely off grid, she loves it, uses the lamp on a nightly basis, andit has become her only cell phone charger, She also loves the radio feature, as entertainment is minimal where she is located, and even at half charge has proven to work adequatly at night.

This is a REALLY nice desk lamp! I have it by my computer most of the time. But the other night I took it over to show some friends how neat it was and when we got home I dropped a box and everything spilled out.... So I grabbed by "desk lamp" and had a GREAT flashlight to help me find everything I dropped. I love the radio and I know that when we have our power outages the charging feature will come in handy.

I wanted to wait a couple of weeks to make sure I was as happy as I was when it arrived. I am happier.

The product is everything as advertised, but it is what I have used it for that has me convinced. I use the light at night on my desk to work late. It is bright, clear, white light. It's nice not to have to plug it in because of where my desk is.

I listen to the radio late at night. The only change I would like is for the volume control to be a bit more graduated. It is set up now to be lo-medium-high. I would like to have more control, but that's not a big deal.

The flashlight is great. I have used it late at night in the house and to go to my basement. One thing, silly and minor but great, is that it is white. When the light is off, I find it easily in the dark.

Anyway, I am ready if the power goes out or there is a storm. We live in WI and we occasionally bad storms. I love that I have a light I can count on, with a radio and an alarm.

I can't see the three rods when the light is hung, so it looks cheap and crooked. If I had bought it locally, I'd return it.

UPDATE, 8.07.2012: It is over 4 years old and still holding up. The one complaint I had is that the bulb looks ugly inside it. I recently used Rust-Oleum 1903830 Frosted Glass 11-Ounce Spray, Frosted Glass to frost the glass and hide the bulb completely. It looks like a brand new lamp! Please view the images I uploaded.

GLASS FROSTING STEPS (should go without saying, but be careful with sharp glass. It tends to be, uh... sharp):

1Remove bulb.

2On inside of light, carefully bend metal tabs away from glass (just enough to free glass).

3Remove each pane of glass.

4Degrease / clean the glass well and dry with a new, lint-free rag.

5Take them OUTSIDE (well away from things you don't want coated in spray paint, like your car).

6Place them on a small, sturdy piece of cardboard with a small gap between each glass piece.

7Follow instructions on can. I did about 5 wet coats.

8Carry the cardboard inside to dry.

9Re-install glass after paint dries (~ 1 hour). Painted side faces INWARD towards bulb.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

It still looks like new after several years of exposure to the harsh Virginia elements! When set to Dusk-to-Dawn, you can leave the light switch on and forget it. The dual-brite function is a really nice touch.

IMPORTANT! If you use a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL), only use a DIMMABLE CFL! Most CFLs are not dimmable, so when this fixture attempts to dim the light (by reducing voltage to the bulb), the CFL ballast dies! It happened twice before I realized the reason. Also, because of the way ballasts work, the dual-brite function becomes hardly noticeable.

After spending several hours looking for a Lantern Style lamp with a motion sensor, I found out that the choices as very limited and most of the ones out there available are extremely expensive. After I found this lamp in Amazon at a very low price I was a little worried the product was not going to be of good quality but once I received it I was very pleased with it looks and quality (good materials and craftsmanship). This lamp is a great bargain and looks and works great. Easy to install.

I bought this a couple of years ago for a vacation rental home. It looks very nice and I really like the way it worksthe light comes on at dusk and stays on at a low level, brightening if something triggers the motion detector. After a few hours it goes off and then is still activated by the motion detector until dawn. The only problem I had with it was I stupidly put a non-dimmable compact fluorescent bulb in it which flickered when dimmed. Now I use a 40 watt incandescent bulb in it which provides plenty of light. Since dimmable compacts are available now I plan to try one in it.

Bought two of these through Amazon about 9 months ago. Both were configured to turn on at sunset and turn off at sunrise. A couple days ago a bulb on one of them went bad. After replacing the bulb with, the fixture no longer works as before. It stays on 100% of the time.

Long story short after tinkering with it for a weekend, I emailed the manufacturer and got a quick response back stating multiple reasons for unit going bad. Coincidentally the email states that a power surge or a bulb failure could permanently damage the unit something their own support website conveniently fails to mention.

If you buy this product, better make sure a.) your bulbs don't burn out and b.) your power never surges. It looks to me that the company engineers failed to account for those two factors during circuit design.

The only PRO about the product is that it looks better than those other motion sensing units you get at those major home improvement stores.

BTW. The other unit is still working... not sure for how long.

---4/24/12 Update ----

After contacting the manufacturer via email and providing the Amazon receipt they shipped two new units. Great customer service! One of the original units is still working as expected.

I wanted to save a little energy with the porch light. I switched from a two bulb dusk-dawn only full strength system. This lantern looks nice and works just fine. The light goes to full strength just as I am leaving the doorway and also when I come up the walk from about 20 feet away.

After reading the other reviews I wasn't sure whether I would like these shades. Some people were calling them yellow and others a cream shade background. The color is actually a muted yellow and definitely darker than a cream. I have beige walls and a green couch. These shades were the perfect pop of color that I needed to bring the room together.

I bought this lamp to light up my sewing machine area in the evenings. It's quite bright, but the shade keeps it focused on my project rather than lighting up the room. It's adjustable and flexible, but height-wise, it's for projects you do sitting down. Since I am machine sewing, I am not using the attached magnifier, which can't enlarge my view of a seam being sewn because the sewing machine is in the way.

Frankly, I am disappointed in the "natural spectrum." I was hoping for something close enough to natural daylight that I could use this lamp to match color shades finely, for example whiter versus yellower shades of white. This lamp will not do that. Shades that look distinctly different in daylight look identical under this light. The lamp appears to merely have an ordinary fluorescent coil bulb like you can buy anywhere. Those are perfectly good bulbs, they do last a long time, but I did not have to buy a special lamp to get one.

I gave this to a friend for Christmas and was shocked at the cheap construction of this lamp. I should have read the description better to see that it was a flimsy white plastic lamp shade!
