I ordered 2 of these lamps thinking they would look awesome. I received 1 and about a week later I received the second one. The problems started when I received the first lamp that was assembled loosely. There is a metal rode that the electrical cord goes through from the base to the light socket. Well in this case the rode wasn't tight so the whole lamp twists, since there are 3 separate pieces. Well I didn't worry so much since I still liked the look and I could live with the rest. If I was to fix this situation I would have to take a rubbery bottom off, which covers the entire bottom, it's stuck on with adhesive around the base of the lamp; it would be ruined.

So a week goes by and I get my second lamp which I was actually still excited to receive. This lamp put me over the boiling point. First, the same situations with all three parts being lose. Well I decided that I could fix this and live without the bottom protection cover. Big mistake, I discovered that the top portion was actually broken. Can you say I'm screwed none returnable. So I bite the bullet and decided that can be glued and faced away from sight. So I get to the center metal piece so that I could tighten it. Well guess what I discovered the top decorative metal piece, that separates the light socket from the lamp was bent, so I fixed it. After all I can't return it since I disassembled it too originally tighten something that was losing in the first place. I get everything to a point where I can live with it. I put the lamp shade on and it's crooked. One side is longer than the other side. I confirmed this by measuring the sides and also trying it on the other lamp. I would blame the delivery service except this thing was packaged so well you could have been on a space ship in outer space and drop it to earth and it still wouldn't be broken.

Beautiful lamp. I like the design. It looks rich. However, I made a mistake with the amber shade. It just isn't bright enough for me. If you need to light up a whole room, this isn't the lamp but great for a portion of the room.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Over the course of the last year, I've been slowly replacing light switches in my house with both this model (OSS10-IDW) as well as the OSSNL-IDW switch. Before settling on these Leviton switches, I tried pretty much every other motion sensing switch I could find at my local hardware stores but none of them worked quite right (including other Leviton models).

The problems with those other switches fell into two basic categories:

1) Most of the motion sensing switches on the market will NOT work correctly with fluorescent lights including CFLs. The main problem is that they will cause the lights to flicker excessively when turned on, and they will never quite turn 100% off either.

2) Many motion switches have to be calibrated for the ambient light level to work correctly. This is a major pain if you install the switch in an area where the light level changes throughout the day.

Fortunately, these new Leviton switches completely resolve both of the problems I mentioned and have worked perfectly for my needs.

Before getting into the things I like about this switch, I need to do a quick comparison between the OSS10-IDW and the OSSNL-IDW. These switches both look identical; and, they actually both come with the same user manual and installation instructions from Leviton. Here are the key differences:

1) The OSSNL-IDW supports BOTH manual-on/auto-off as well as auto-on/auto-off modes and the OSS10-IDW ONLY supports manual-on/auto-off. In other words, if you want a manual-on/auto-off switch, both of these will fit the bill perfectly so be sure to compare prices before assuming the OSS10-IDW has less features and will be cheaper. In fact, at the time of this review, the OSSNL-IDW is actually selling for 25% less here on Amazon! If, on the other hand, you want a motion switch that will turn on automatically you should be sure to get the OSSNL-IDW. (There are some reviewers that claim this switch (OSS10-IDW) will turn on automatically, but that isn't correct.)

2) The other difference is that the auto-off range for the OSS10-IDW can be configured between 30 seconds and 30 minutes. The range for the OSSNL-IDW can be configured between 30 seconds and 2 hours. Everyone's needs will be different here; but, in my opinion, the smaller range is actually better since it is easier to narrow down a specific time in that range. If you do want the auto-off configured for more than 30 minutes, be sure to stick with the OSSNL-IDW.

Now that I've covered the differences, I'll focus specifically on what I like about the OSS10-IDW:

1) This switch is easy to install. There is one more wire compared to a typical switch since the switch itself needs to keep power but the wiring is very simple and the instruction sheet is clear about what needs to be done.

2) The switch is highly configurable. Things that can be adjusted include: auto-off time, motion detection range, and the nite light dimmer (the nite light can be completely turned off as well). There are also integrated blinders if you don't want the switch to detect motion from a specific area.

3) This is a smart switch. Even though the switch is manual-on/auto-off, it will turn itself on automatically if you walk into the room right after it turned itself off. This is perfect for closets.

4) The switch is very sensitive to motion. Unlike some other switches I tried, you won't have to wave your hand periodically to keep it on it detects even the slightest motion, which has been great for us.

5) The night light is handy in some cases. I also like that I can turn it completely off since that is what I prefer more often than not.

6) I know this is subjective, but I believe this is also the best looking motion switch I've seen.

Although this switch has worked well, I have found that the cover over the configuration dials is kind of a pain. The problem is, once you install the faceplate, the cover can no longer be easily removed. Fortunately, once the switch is configured, you'll never have to touch the configuration again; but, it seems to work best to just leave that cover off for a day or two while I'm messing around with finding the optimal settings (each room is just a bit different).

Overall, I am very pleased with these Leviton switches and I highly recommend them. As I mentioned before, be sure to consider the OSSNL-IDW before buying this switch but I think most people looking for a manual-on/auto-off switch will be happy with either one.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I originally thought I had a problem with my switch, but after speaking with their technical assistance it is working as intended.

Important note: This switch does NOT turn on the lights when you enter the room. It is intended only as an energy savings device to ensure the lights aren't left on inadvertantly.

There is a button that you push to turn the lights on or off. This is the main means by which the switch is intended to work.

You can set the movemement timing to set the delay when the lights turn off after the last movement was detected.

If the lights turn off based on a lack of movement, they can be turned back on by waving your arms around within 30 seconds after they turn off BUT the ability to turn the lights back on through movement ends 30 seconds after they turn off. After 30 seconds, you need to push the button to turn the lights back on.

This will NOT automatically turn ON the lights when you walk into a dark room.

There is also a nightlight that can be adjusted based on strength.

The coverplate is not included, but a single gang cover can be purchased for less than a dollar at most hardware stores.

POSTSCRIPT: It seems several of the reviews here from Vine are actually linked to the wrong product. Those reviewers received a switch that WILL turn on the light when you enter the room. This OSS10 model does not do that. I have tried and failed to figure out the Leviton naming conventions lots of things that sound alike but have different functions. If you are considering purchasing this, I'd be very careful that the exact model numbers correspond to: (1) what you are purchasing; and (2) the functions you want.

This (MANUAL on) OSS10 detector is good for an area that might have occasional false infrared (heat) triggers such as a furnace, boiler, water heater room (that is where I installed mine). This manual on detector won't come on with those false triggers.

Even thought this is NOT sold as an auto on detector, when light turns off, you seem to have about 25 seconds to produce motion and the lights actually turn back on automatically. For example, if you're in a room with no movement and the lights go off, you have up to 25 seconds to produce motion and they will turn back on automatically. After 25 seconds though, you have to manually push the switch to turn on the lights.

Leviton's sister detector, the AUTO on, auto off detector (OSSNL) would work for most applications where false triggering would not be a problem.

Notes about this detector:

* Some motion switches don't work with florescent lights. This one does. It works with florescent lights, CFL's, electronic ballasts and small motors (1/4hp) too.

* There is no minimum electrical load required.

* This device DOES require all leads to be hooked up, not just the line and load wires.

* The same switch can be hooked up for either single pole or 3-way applications (3-way requires 2 detectors, not just a 3-way switch and a detector).

* Lights can be switched both on and off by pushing the manual switch below the detector. One way to think of this switch is to turn lights on and off via the pushbutton switch, and the detector will turns things off if you forget or leave.

* Nightlight brightness can be adjusted, including turned off.

* When lights are off, the nightlight brightens when motion is detected (aids finding switch in dark).

* A small red LED blinks while motion is detected.

* This detector seems very good at sensing movement.

* A minor point, the instructions are good, but maybe TOO good. They provided so many added notes that you can sometimes lose sight of the main point (like hooking it up). It would be better if instructions were divided into main points (how to hook up) and then added notes. The notes are very useful, but can be off the main subject and distracting.

What most people would want to know (I think) is that the product works as intended, and yes, this Leviton switch does just that. Now, with that said, be sure you know exactly what you want the switch to do as the intentions (from the manufacturer) may not match your expectations if you aren't careful.

If you intend to have this switch automatically turn on lights when you enter a room then understand clearly this particular model doesn't do that. If you intend to have the switch automatically turn off lights after a room has been left unoccupied then you understand what this particular model switch does.

In my home, with children that seemed to have fulfilled the curse that my parents placed upon me ("I hope someday you have children just like you!"), I'm left with lights on in unoccupied rooms over and over again. In that case this switch is great for saving money and turning off unneeded lights as the kids leave the rooms with the lights on as if their father's bank account is unlimited.

I almost didn't order this based on a previous review. Either the company (Made in USA, by the way) changed the magnetic base or the previous reviewer had a "bad" magnet. This seems unlikely. The lamp is heavy-duty: thick gauge cord, amazingly robust gooseneck and a solid feel to the switch.

I put it on the cast iron base of a die filing machine and had zero movement from the magnetic base even though I really tried. The only "problem" was getting the magnet loose when I decided to place it on a different position on the machine.

I've used other, very expensive, machine lights and in terms of quality and function, it's very comparable. A very fair price.

I personally don't think the magnet-base is powerful enough for how rigid the gooseneck arm is. I appreciate the rigidity as the lamp holds in place very well. However, whenever I attempt to adjust the lamp, the magnetic base breaks free and the lamp comes loose. I am placing it on a pretty thick and solid metal base.

I'm sure this is a good product for some, not quite what I wanted. The arm could loosen up over time, but I'm not sure that is what I really want.

The bulb cover is plastic not metal, and the switch is oddly located at the top of the lamp (which I can see in the picture but mistook for something else).

Overall a solid product that was not right for my application.

I bought this product as a gift for my husband who loves to build models but has had trouble seeing the small parts lately. He has only had it a month or so, so I can't comment on durability. That said, it arrived quickly and in perfect working order. The light is not only bright, it's enclosed which is a great point for him as he works with tools right next to it (and thwacking the bulb would be an easy thing to do). It attaches easily and the cord is long enough to reach the 6 or so ft. to the outlet. It took him all of 5 minutes to set it up. The magnification is great! I've even used it to read tiny print on a bottle that I couldn't quite make out.

Mostly a decent lamp but a huge complaint of mine is that it refuses to stay in position where I need it. Tightening the knobs doesn't even come close to helping. I had to add a weight to the light to get it to somewhat cooperate but is still quite a pain to use while soldering because of that. Otherwise the light is good and the magnification is good.

I put this light in my front entry. Like most ceiling lights, it was a bit of a pain to install. The standard "just manipulate these 2 screws that are just a little too short while holding the fixture in place and screwing them in" instruction set is getting rather old. It would be nice if some innovative company made a few minor design changes for an easier install.

Once it's up though, the light looks nice. It's a little taller than I would like and the bronze is slightly darker than it looks on the internet. Changing the bulbs is easy. I think it was a little pricy for the quality, but unlike the cheap ones at the local hardware stores, this one has not shorted out or burned up the bulbs. I would buy more of these.
