At first I thought that the lamp couldn't be left in the straight position, but after a good tug, I was able to straighten it completely or swing it out. There were a couple of issues, however. When 150W incandescent bulbs are used, the bulb in the higher position sticks up above the glass. I had to put a 150W in the bottom holder and a smaller 100W bulb in the higher socket. The lamp is meant to hold two 150 W bulbs, so this is silly. A glass bowl that was a bit higher would have solved this. Also, a silver cap near the top is crooked. This part came preassembled and cannot be straightened. This is minor, however. If CFLs are used, the company recommends that they only be used on the high setting, so if you're planning to use those bulbs, be aware that you will not have the option of using a lower setting. The price at this site was the lowest I found for this lamp. I originally bought it at a local store for $179. Fortunately, I hadn't opened the box yet and was able to return it when I found the lamp on Amazon. We were looking for a bright lamp and since they no longer sell 500W halogen lamps, this was the next best alternative. The lamp is attractive, in a coquettish way, and the light is bright (though not as bright as the stars deep in the heart of Texas) for a non-halogen lamp. I would recommend this product.
