It is nicely built for this price, has sufficient light with decent color, and is a good height for using over the shoulder either for something like a recliner or working at a desk.
The lamp comes disassembled in a box about 22"x14"x9" (ish). It takes about 4 minutes to put together. The main tube is in two pieces which must be threaded one into the other, and then the thinner top screws in and then the base. The threads are more robust than the 25$ TARGET brand floor lamps but use caution not to cross thread or strip out the threads if you do, you're either out of luck or left to deal with a crooked lamp. (BTW, I for my kids' rooms I ended up buying 6 cheap TARGET brand floor lamps before I got 3 that worked)
HERE'S THE CATCH... and why I took away a star:
The fine print in the instructions that come with the light reads "This lighting system is designed for use with OttLite(R) Type M tubes (Style Number SB20-M)." These are NOT your typical CFL bulbs in that they have a square base with two offset conductor pins. Not all OttLite bulbs work in this lamp. Amazon sells the OttLite B84J35 20-Watt Type M Replacement Bulb for about 18$ on the date I write this.
The OttLite bulbs part number TC10234 18W and T135Z5 13W do NOT work.... DAMHIK. The instructions that came with the 2nd light I bought were.... enlightening.
In the end my choices were to spend 1/3 the money and get junk... lots more money for a lamp not that much better, or 75$ and have to deal with a funky, special light bulb. I went with the OttLite twice.

This OttLite is beautiful, its height is perfect for the average sofa or easy chair, and the price is certainly right. It's sturdy and has a heavy base but was a breeze to assemble without tools. It looks like a quality item that you'd expect to cost more than it actually did. I'm sure lots of people love it for reading, needlework, and other such activities. It gives off a very bright but focused light and, for the five minutes I could tolerate reading a book beneath it, the text contrast was good.However, if you're standing or sitting anywhere other than right under the lamp, it's so bright it could hurt your eyes especially if the lamp is angled such that the shade doesn't fully cover the bulb from where you're standing/sitting. Also, I was surprised by how intensely I disliked the unnatural light color, which is exactly the same as those glaring, purplish-white car headlights that it's hard to look directly at. It gave my book pages a purple hue and created a slight glare. Sitting beneath the OttLite made me feel like I had a stage spotlight focused on me. I wound up moving to sit by a standard table lamp.
Too bad you can't use a different bulb in the lamp; if so, it would be ideal. As it is, I'd have exchanged it for something that suits me better had my daughter not decided it was perfect for shadow-animal-making and practicing singing on stage. ;)
