Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This floor lamp is ideal for working on crafts, such as needlepoint, where a bright light and magnifier, are desirable. The light is an 18 watt fluorescent bulb which turns on instantly it is adjustable by moving the gooseneck to the desired position. The illumination can be directed to the point where it is needed and can be positioned so it does not shine in the user's eyes. The bulb and lamp shade do not get hot after prolonged use.

My wife used another craft lamp for years, but that lamp had a translucent shade that let light filter through, which was annoying to her and anyone else who happened to be in the room. This Ottlite product has permanently replaced her old lamp.

The position of the magnifying glass is also adjustable it also has a flexible gooseneck and, unlike the light, has a thumb screw height adjustment that allows it to slide up and down the pole. It would have been nice if the light had a similar adjustment, but the gooseneck is sufficiently flexible and long to allow us to get the light to the desired position. The base of the lamp is heavy, so it is unlikely that it will accidently tip over. My wife is very happy with this lamp and highly recommends it.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Being an artist and art teacher, I've always wanted an Ottlite, and the color quality achieved with the use of this bulb doesn't at all disappoint! I'm just starting to get into quilting, so using an Ottlite to match colors of fabrics and threads just right (even for just standard sewing) would be a good way to put this lamp to use, but I can see it as being far more valuable for painterly pursuits that portrait painting job you got, where your client wants you to enlarge and reproduce a photographic family portrait onto canvas, or that home portrait you've been commissioned to paint, and you need to get the color of the paint on the house just right in the new painting.

Ottlites have been touted for years for the color quality their lamps and bulbs produce, and I can see why so many have spoken so highly of the quality of color the bulbs do produce. But, outside of that thirteen dollar bulb I can get here from Amazon, I just still find myself a bit confounded here by the price. Granted, the base of the lamp is HEAVY! So heavy that, when unpacking it, you need to take care that said base doesn't fall out of the packaging without you being prepared for it. The base feels like it may weigh a full twenty pounds in and of itself, and it's really not THAT big! But, I appreciate how heavy it is this lamp isn't going anywhere once you set it in place to work under it!

Aside from the price, I feel the features here could've been bumped up a bit more, or the price knocked further down, to adjust to make the customer feel like they really are getting what they paid for. The hood of the lamp is stiff, and hard to move in order to direct the light just where you need it. The range of the light doesn't spread very far beyond the head, either. And, once you've got the hood angled where you want it, you'll be stuck staring directly up at the exposed bulb not the most comfortable thing ever. It wouldn't have taken much to attach some sort of shield both to protect the bulb, and to diffuse the light, making it less unpleasant to look up at the lamp, while not compromising its effectiveness. As for the magnifying glass, it's almost a throwaway for me. The gooseneck it's attached to is stiff, and hard to position just where you need it, and the strength of it once you get it there just doesn't even make it much worth the effort.

I can now say that I own an Ottlite, and the quality of light and full spectrum of colors produced DO live up to the hype, but the hype just doesn't justify the cost here, at least to me... Perhaps just trying an OttLite 25ED12R 25w Edison CFL Swirl Bulb or a OttLite B84J35 20-Watt Type M Replacement Bulb in an existing lamp will give you similar, if not identical, results in an existing lamp, without the extra 60 or so bucks for a floor lamp whose real value at that price I question...

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program My dad used to be the supplier of magnifying craft lamps to Sears and high-end specialty stores in the US and Canada. I was naturally excited have been offered this lamp to review as I have several others that I can compare it to in the attic and basement from the 70s, 80s and early 90s.

What I like about this lamp:

+ It is designed for function.

+ The light cover is opaque and therefore reduces/prevents glare from shining through other "prettier" lamps that feature see-through shades.

+ The light is a true white-white so your fabrics and other craft items look true-to-colour.

+ The base is appropriately heavy to steady the lamp and prevent it from tipping over during use.

My main dislikes about this lamp is:

The quality of the magnifying glass is mediocre at best.

The size of the magnifying glass is too small. Something a few inches in diameter larger would have been perfect.

Overall this lamp is not bad compared to what is available on the market today. There are magnifying lamps at higher price points that are worse for various reasons and of course much better ones that coat at least four times as much.

For someone that needs a little magnification and decent light for their sewing or small crafts this would be a good lamp. Recommended at this price point.

Honest reviews on OttLite W9437T-SHPR 18-watt Easy View Floor Lamp, Dove Grey

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I live in a small condo, so several rooms of my house serve double duty; for example, the dining room is also my sewing room. The lighting in the room is usually limited to the overhead light and whatever natural light comes in the window (dependent on sun and daytime). Given that my eyes are no longer young, that isn't always enough light for things like needle threading, measuring or close detail work. This OttLite Easy View Floor Lamp has been a great addition to my home!

When I'm not sewing, the OttLite sits off in a corner. Because of its dove grey color and slim profile, it blends in to the background and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. When I AM sewing, it sits right next to the dining room table and illuminates my machine and sewing area. The 3x optical grade magnifier can easily swing into use for needle threading and other close-in work, and swing back out of the way when not needed, thanks to its flexible neck.

Because of the weight of the lamp's base, which is considerable, the box ships quite heavy, but I could still lift and carry it. Some assembly is needed, but I was able to put it together myself in about 10 minutes. It's just really a process of screwing together the lower "pole" to the base and the upper "pole" to the lower "pole" and then clipping the magnifier on. You can put the magnifier at a height that works for you. I really liked the flexibility of that!

Note that the lamp is packed on both sides of a styrofoam block. This is unusual and I didn't notice it at first. I saw that I didn't have all the parts and went to check the styrofoam block and could tell it was still heavy so I turned it over and opened the other side and that's where the rest of the parts were.

I recommend you check over all your parts when you unpack the pieces from the box. My magnifier came with a scratch. It's only about 1/3" and I made the decision to not pack it all up and send it back, but you may feel differently.

While it's great that the base of the lamp is heavy to keep the lamp from toppling over when the light and magnifier are bent over, it is SO heavy that I find it difficult to move it (but then, I am very short). The lamp head and the magnifier, though, are quite easy to move to a position that works for you.

I used the magnifier to thread my sewing machine needle yesterday...I was so happy! This is something that often takes me multiple tries and I got it on the first try using the magnifier. I haven't done any quilting since I got the light, but I know it is going to be beneficial with that as well!

When I first plugged in the light and turned it on, I was surprised to see that the light seemed so dim. It is only an 18-watt bulb. BUT, when I put it over my sewing machine, I found it provides more than enough focused light!

I am really loving the Ottlite. I would wish for it to be a BIT lighter so it was easier to move from place to place or room to room and use for other purposes but, on the whole, I think it is a very useful product!

After putting together we realized the hood over the light was not adjustable.

Highly awkward to use. Is also too short for standard chair height.

Poorly built and bad design
