We've had our Torchiere for a while now, and we like it. With two CFL bulbs, it gives off plenty of light for the room without using huge amounts of electricity or generating too much heat. Assembly was no problem, and it uses regular CFLs, so replacement bulbs should be easy to find.

The only issue I found is that the lamp is advertised as having a 3-way switch (off/low/high), but ours appears to be mis-wired; there appears to be no difference between the "low" and "high" settings... so our lamp has Off/On/On. It's not a major issue for us; we just use it at the "High" setting when we use it. But the lamp was advertised with "Hi-Low switch included", so the description was misleading based on what we received.

Still, I can recommend the Torchiere IF you're okay without the High-Low capability.

This torchiere light is quite good. The design looks beautiful, and the steel finish is well done. The included bulbs are not very bright, but can of course be replaced with higher wattage compact fluorescents.

A few negatives:

1. The dimmer switch does not feel very solid. Hopefully it will last, but it seems rather flimsy.

2. The lamp supposedly has two levels of brightness. I assumed this was achieved by only switching on either one or both of the bulbs. Instead, the current is apparently modulated at the lower light setting. The result at the dim setting are poor: Very little difference from the full bright setting, and there is a flicker at the low setting. At the high setting the light works fine.

Overall a stylish and good light for the price. Since the bulbs are compact fluorescents, the lamp is very energy efficient and emits very little heat.

Frys used to sell a halogen version of these for ten bucks a pop, and they were way better than this one (for a fifth the price). The Frys version had infinitely variable dimming, (this has two settings). These assemble poorly and are hard to get to even stand straight. One of the two I ordered was all dented up and the switch was broken off (even though the box appeared undamaged).

They look ok (when undented).

Was easy to assemble even with just a picture for instructions. The lamp does what I want it to and throws out a large area of light. The bulbs included were broken on arrival due to amazon's poor packing. So currently using halogen bulbs and they work fine.

UPDATE September, 2013: Downgraded the rating on this from 4 stars to 2, and here's why:

We bought this lamp in April, 2012, specifically hoping for a better quality version of the tall black torchiere style lamp. The only kind available in our town were the cheap $15 ones that would last maybe six months, so we dropped significant money on this lamp.

At 8 months of constant use, it still worked just fine, but it always burned through light bulbs at an astounding rate. We'd average about three weeks of use per bulb, on for 8-12 hours per day. The lamp is left on, not turned on and off repeatedly, so the bulbs should last. I don't know why they didn't.

By 15 months of use, it started using bulbs even quicker, burning out one every 15 days or so. Then a couple weeks ago, I noticed any time the lamp was bumped when vacuuming, or maybe jostled a little when turning it on, a bulb would go out. After two weeks of this, the lamp quit for good, with not even a year and a half of use. For the price we paid, that is unacceptable. (For what it's worth, we have bad luck with these types of lamps regardless of price. We've tried four different electrical outlets and surge protectors, but nothing seems to help, they all burn out quickly. Yet no other lamp in our house has this problem, and no other appliance plugged into the same outlets have ever burned out. It must be the lamps, but I couldn't tell you what exactly it is that causes them to die so quickly.)

Further, the quality of the lamp itself is not on par with the cost. The three sections that need to be screwed together are stripped so it's very easy to screw them together so they're crooked. It took quite a bit of work to get the lamp straight, and when we did, you could see rough spots from sloppy construction at each of the joints. We had to file the areas to keep from having sharp little plastic bits sticking out. Over time, the lamp would go crooked again as those stripped joints would move a little every time we turned it on and off. The top part that holds the light bulbs is not very well attached to the lamp which made assembly a bit frustrating, and changing light bulbs can also be frustrating since the sockets are so loose.

Extremely disappointed with this product.
